Time to soak up some culture! Last Sunday I visited the Rijksmuseum at the Museumplein. The state museum, is home to masterpieces by Rembrandt and Vermeer, as well as other Dutch masters of the Golden Age. Here are some of my picks of unmissable artworks. Hold on to your cheese. 🧀

#1 I Amsterdam Sign

My first jaw-drop moment was outside, at the I Amsterdam Sign. WHY are these people blocking my view?! Ok, just kidding. 🤗 Apparently, there is another, smaller, Amsterdam sign that changes location around the city. These traveling letters are currently chilling at the RAI (exhibition and convention center). I still need to visit that place. Hopefully, I will be able to get a good selfie shot when I am there.

#2 The Night Watch

I guess you all know the famous painting “Militia Company of District II under the Command of Captain Frans Banninck Cocq”. No? There are several titles but the nickname The Night Watch caught on. This master piece is huge… It is approximately 5 meters by 4 meters. Any who…my point is: when this massive painting was moved to Amsterdam’s town hall, it was too big to fit the wall where it was meant to hang. It was common to cut the canvas to accommodate its new home. 😱

In this edit, the top of the arch, the balustrade, and the edge of the step were lost, along with two figures on the left side. What you did not know is: there is a small copy of the painting that gives a clear idea of the original’s composition. THANKFULLY! 🙄

#3 Good Hope

There is a current exhibition about the “relationship” between South Africa and the Netherlands.

“The ‘Good Hope’ illustrates a significant aspect of Dutch colonial history in all its nuances. A tale that is both painful and striking, but more especially disturbing and recognisable.” – A. van Dis. He hit the nail on the head.

No pictures of the milkmaid, huh? I guess I could not find her or was not craving any milk at the time. I made some room for a mirror selfie instead.

Download the multimedia tour to your smartphone. It is available on all app stores and is completely free. – just make sure you remember your headphones. I wish I had known this before I went…

– How to avoid the queues:

• Pre-order your tickets online or use a museumcard.
• Go during the week, specifically Monday-Thursday.
• If you decide to go during the weekend, the key is to arrive early or at 14:00.

– Must do:

Eat a stroopwafel! These super sweet and gooey waffles are completely addictive. It is hard to stop at one. 😟 HOW DO I STOP…?! HELP!
